Diagnosis is a process based on knowledge and experience through which the patient reports on his/her general and dental health and the practitioner identifies a medical condition in order to then be able to treat it. A correct diagnosis is therefore the basis for efficient and effective therapy. The initial check-up involves: - a review of the patient’s medical and dental history; - an inspection of the oral cavity, including the teeth and mucous membrane; - an x-ray if necessary. It is advisable to take any previous x-rays or test results with you to your first appointment. Gathering further data, such as plaster models of the dental arches and detailed x-rays of the teeth or teleradiography of the cranium and photographic analysis, might be necessary before starting the treatment. If signs and/or symptoms of temporomandibular disorders (face muscles pain, mandibular clicking or crepitus) as well as migraines or headaches are detected, a thorough clinical and instrumental diagnosis is always performed, on the basis of the most updated scientific evidence.
