BRUXISM: recognising and treating it

Around 6 million people in Italy suffer from Bruxism

AIM

Bruxism is a parafunctional habit characterised by the clenching and grinding of the teeth during sleep, associated with the so-called micro-arousals. Recent studies have shown that bruxism is related to the activation of the autonomic nervous system: said activation triggers a chain of physiological events, determining an increase in the heart rate and, after few seconds, contractions of the masseter muscles.

Around 6 million people in Italy suffer from bruxism. Sleep bruxism causes headaches, muscle pain, hypersensitive teeth, tooth wear, fractures of dental restorations, loss of implants, loosening of the teeth, and orthodontic relapses. Knowing the physiopathology of this motor condition associated with sleep makes it possible to understand how to diagnose it correctly and objectively, improving the chances of communicating with the patient and devising the most appropriate course of treatment.

The instructors of the course have been selected from among those who contributed to the clinical and bioengineering research which led to the creation of the Bruxoff device.

Bruxism and treatment guidelines to successfully manage patients.

TheBruxoff device: how it works

Bruxoff is a portable holter which records the EMG activity of the masseter muscles and ECG activity during sleep. The recording of the signal can be done by the patient during the night, at home.

 The Bruxmeter software

Thanks to the innovative Bruxmeter software the dentist can display the results of the automatic analysis and make a quick and simple diagnosis.

METHOD

A theoretical part will be followed by a practical session, in which the participants will be divided into small groups. They will be able to interact with the instructors who will explain how Bruxoff and the Bruxmeter software work.

Those participating in the course will be listed on the bruxoff.com website as providers.
